A conversation with 'Winter' by John Marsden

A conversation from ‘Winter’ By John Marsden

“How much are they getting paid Mr Carruthers?” asked Winter.
He looked at me stunned.
“Pardon me? Well the Estate pays for their wages, water, electricity and they also get free rent” said Mr Carruthers”.
“So they make at least a thousand dollars plus?” Winter questioned.
“Ah, yes.  That would be correct” answered Mr Carruthers”.
I knew Mr Carruthers didn’t like these questions but someone had a lot to answer for.
“Look at all the blackberry vines.  The gutters will be grand canon in a few years and the water that goes through needs a passport”.
“I don’t see what you’re getting at” he seemed confused.
“ I just want to know why they ripped me off.
"Settle down Winter.” Mr Carruthers politely said.
"Settle down! What! You want me to settle down!? I don't like them and the way they're treating my home. I want them out of here and it has to be before five. If they aren’t they will find themselves in the paper and I will tell the police."
"Winter, think about this. You're being unreasonable” Mr Carruthers stated.
“I'm am not! I am smart. So If they're not gone you are" Winter responded with anger.

Athletics

“GO!”  Whaea Meri said. BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! the ground was shaking as we all ran up the lane, I was running with determination. My heart was beating faster than my moving feet. I was moving so fast that when I was running with my mouth open, the sun was drying it up. I had butterflies as I was storming towards the finish line. I thought to myself, let’s win this time. I was moving my arms with my legs trying to pump them faster so I can pick up speed. I was sweating like a waterfall.

I couldn’t see anyone beside me so I thought that it is a positive as no one was catching up. “GO Esmonde! Go Esmonde!” the blue team was shouting as I ran past them, getting closer to the finish line. My legs were pounding and aching. “YES” I said as I passed the line. I was shocked that I had won. One of my goals was to win and I achieved that goal because I won.
The End.
